The foramen ovale allows blood to enter the left atrium
from the right atrium in the fetal heart. It usually closes
soon after birth, but in about 25 percent of people, it remains
open. If a surgical repair is necessary, the hole can be
patched or stitched closed. The da Vinci® S
Surgical System enables patients to avoid “open chest” surgery.
Instead, surgeons make small incisions between the ribs.
This dramatically reduces post-operative pain, scarring and
patient recovery time, as well as the risk of infection.
