The abdominal aorta is a large blood vessel that supplies
oxygen-rich blood to the abdomen, pelvis and legs. An aneurysm
occurs when a portion of the wall of the aorta becomes week,
balloons outward and threatens to burst. Surgery is performed
on an abdominal aortic aneurysm when the risk of rupture
outweighs the risk of surgery. Repair involves strengthening
the weak area of the artery with a tube-like structure called
an aortic graft.
