The gastric bypass is one of the most technically demanding
bariatric operations. The goal is to reduce the size of the
stomach, and as a result, the amount of food that can be
eaten. At the same time, the procedure diverts food consumed
away from the portion of the digestive system that absorbs
calories. The procedure requires the surgical creation of
a direct connection between the stomach and the small intestine,
called a gastrojejunostomy. Leaks in this connection are
associated with high rates of mortality and complications
including re-operations and sepsis, a serious blood stream
infection. Robotic instrument control minimizes patient trauma
that can result from using the abdominal wall for leverage
during surgery on very overweight patients.
